We're going to kayak The Excellent Econ River from 419 Bridge to Snowhill Road. Kayak an 8 mile downstream section of the undeveloped Econlockhatchee River from CR 419 in Oviedo to Snowhill Rd. One of Florida's Designated Paddling Trails. Tannin waters, sandy bottom and sand bars on the banks. Some nice twisty and winding turns. Eagles nest and more. A pleasant 8 mile downstream wilderness paddle.

The Econ River is a great place to spend the day canoeing, picnicking and splashing around in the water. But residents claim that this little river has a much more sinister side. Allegedly occurring every October 13, the spirit of Christopher Klink appears hanging from under the bridge. A bright light will flash just before his apparition emerges and the river will begin to flow backwards. Fact or Fiction? It is for you to decide...

The Wekiva River is a wild and scenic river designated by the State of Florida as an "Outstanding Florida Waterway". This section proves that claim with its ancient cypress and oak trees laced with Spanish Moss that tower along the river banks. This is a subtropical paradise that seems frozen in time. The lower section of the Wekiva begins at Katies Landing and eventually winds its way to the St John's River where we takeout at Highbanks in DeBary. On this slow winding, scenic journey we will encounter very few signs of civilization. The lower section will offer us a chance to view gators, osprey, turtles, manatee, turkey, egrets, herons among the many types of water fowl. After the confluence of Blackwater Creek/Wekiva, we enter the St John's where it gets wider for the last 1.5 miles of our trip to the take out at Highbanks; where it's important to all stay together as a group.

Rock Springs Run is an oasis amid ever-expanding greater Orlando. On this 8.5 mile downstream journey we will experience clear, green water with a sandy bottom. Tall trees form a complete canopy on much of this gorgeous waterway. Lush vegetation, water lily pads and water reeds line each side of the banks. RSR is spring fed and runnable year-round with a 3-5 mph flow. There are many areas along the bank where we can pull over and enjoy a dip in the cool clear water. We can stop at either Big Buck or Indian Mound Campsite for lunch break. After winding through the marshes we will end our journey at Wekiva Island, aka, "Party Central"; where there are cabanas set up with people partying the weekends away with music and drink.

Juniper Springs is a seven mile downstream pristine spring run, with lots of twists and turns. First timers will be amazed with this paddle, crystal clear shallow water at launch. The spring waters have been measured at 550 million gallons of clear cool water flowing per day. Johnny Weismuller filmed some of his Tarzan movies here. Weeki Wachee Springs is a first magnitude spring discharging 64 million gallons of crystal clear water a day. Along the journey down the river we will probably encounter many types of wildlife including; manatee, gators, raccoons, otters and numerous waterfowl. The first four miles of this trip retains its wild, pristine undeveloped character, which is quite beautiful with the last three miles having succumbed to human development.

This historic and world-renowned tourist attraction features Weeki Wachee Spring, one of Florida's thirty-three first magnitude springs. The spring, plus a second-magnitude spring in the park and several smaller springs outside the park, combine to form the seven mile long crystal clear Weeki Wachee River.

The spring's average discharge is 112 million gallons a day. The sandy bottomed spring pool is large, at 165' by 210' but the vent is a small 20' by 3' opening through exposed limestone rock at a depth of 185'. The force of the discharge is too strong for safe entry except during drought conditions. Divers report that the cave has a room-like tunnel that is 55'wide,28'high and 220'long. They have been able to map and explore over 6,700' of deep passages and report one pit to be just over 400'deep, the deepest recorded in the United States.

We putin at Rainbow Spgs State Park canoe launch and paddle upstream to the gorgeous springhead and then paddle downstream to the takeout at Centennial Park on The Withlacochee River S in Dunnellon. We will paddle approx., 8 miles downstream from Gores to Eureka West Landing. This section is among the best paddling in the state. Wildlife-management areas border most of the river, making for a wild setting. The Ocklawaha is said to be a very old river geologically, and as a result has created a mile-wide valley. It has a sand bottom and its waters tend to be very clear with occasional areas where tannin from the swamps colors the water a darker hue.

Animal and bird life are abundant here with the usual raccoons, skunks and armadillo present, as well as deer, fox, and otters and even some elusive troops of Rhesus monkeys originally from downstream on the Silver River. There are side streams and springs to explore as well as rope swings to jump from.

We'll enter the lock and while sitting in our kayaks the water level will drop to normal river level, the lock will open and we will begin our 13.5 mile downstream paddle to Ray Wayside and takeout. On the first 6.5 miles, we will paddle on a man made canal that is cleared on the left but has a nice scenic forest on the right. There is a picnic area along the way on this part, where we can stop to eat lunch and relax. Admittingly this section is not the most scenic of the trip; but the next 8 miles makes up for it with awe inspiring towering Cypress trees bordering both banks. The final part of our journey leads us where the Silver and Ock meet, where the water begins to become clear and we can see some springs and aquatic plant life swaying underneath our kayaks. We then enter the short canal that leads to Ray Wayside and takeout.

This is a blog about all the places that I go kayaking with my meet up group: Florida Kayak/Canoe. I will start by saying today we did a very fun paddle at Crystal River. We got to see so many manatees. The only problem with todays paddle was that there were so many people out snorkling with them, that us kayakers barley had any room to paddle! Anyway, it was a very fun paddle and thank you to my father who planned and hosted it. Here is what he posted:
